Concept:
I collected these photos over a long period of time, during which I spent many a day out with friends and family. I brought my camera along often to desensitise everyone to the camera’s presence, in order to capture the moments where the person was at ease with the world around them. I felt like the photos reflected the subject’s natural resting face, and real mood, rather than a forced outlook which is usually given if a camera is suddenly introduced into an environment without warning.
Influences:
For this entire module I was heavily influenced by the close-up portrait style of a Canadian photographer by the name of Joel Bedford. His use of a short f stop and being very close to the subject’s face brought the emotion displayed by the subject to the immediate attention of us, the viewer.

Process:
I attempted to emulate that style of close up facial photography, primarily in the self-portrait, to a small degree of success. However, I found with the other two photos, having a background behind the subject gave the photos an added layer of depth. This also helped to tone down the intensity of having the subject so close in the frame.
